Maybe you have heard about the Gutenberg Project. It's a collection of literature that is old enough so that it's no longer under copyright. It's a great resource to find the works of William Shakespeare as plain text for download.
But you may also find newer literature from your favorite author. Robert Sheckley is one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors and some of his works are also available there.
But there are some facts on the Gutenberg Project that I never liked. One is that I have to know what I'm looking for, that means I have to search for author or title to find something. Another point is, that there is no PDF download format available.
Then I found the site manybooks.net, where you can get an overview of the "books of the week" when you come to their homepage. They also have an RSS Feed, so I could put that in my Google Reader and now I get all new published books as soon as they arrive. The database behind their offer is the Gutenberg Project in the first place, but you can also see some books that comes from authors who publish their works for free on the internet.
For example, you can find all current works from Cory Doctorow including his latest novel "For the Win".
I have subscribed to their RSS Feed for all new titels in English and German (you can select an RSS feeed sorted by language or by category) and I download these occassionally when I find something interesting or if it's written by one of my favorite authors.
